What is a Colony?
We are a Colony! A Colony is the first step towards becoming a chapter. In order to become a full chapter the CNU Colony is required to meet fifteen obligations set out by the National Fraternity. We are currently a recognized Colony of Psi Upsilon Fraternity and we are currently submitting a petition to become a full chapter.
Does CNU decide whether Psi Upsilon becomes a fraternity?
Being a colony has nothing to do with Christopher Newport University. In order to become a recognized campus fraternity the CNU colony must affiliate itself as a chapter of a national fraternity.
How soon will the CNU Colony obtain full Chapter status?
The CNU Colony will obtain full chapter status once our petition is approved by the Executive Board of our National Council.
Are you planning to obtain CNU IFC recognition?
Yes! We as a fraternity have two goals. 1) To gain full Chapter status from our national fraternity and 2) to become a recognized fraternity at Christopher Newport University. Our goals are too expand greek life at CNU in order to share the many benefits of our great national tradition with undergraduate men and the local community.
Where can I find Psi Upsilon?
Psi Upsilon is all around campus throughout all organizations. Psi Upsilon includes members of former Varsity Sports Teams, Professional Organizations, and Religious Institutions across campus. Not only are members of Psi U involved, but they are involved at the highest level in many cases including Presidents and high ranking membership in groups such as Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity and the National Contract Management Association.
If I were to join, would I need to get involved?
As a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity you will be expected to take an active role in the community as well as campus life. Psi Upsilon promotes campus involvement and it shows with nearly 80% of all members being involved with some club or organization outside of the fraternity.
Is joining a fraternity going to hurt my grades?
No. Our goal as a fraternity is to help young undergraduates expand themselves socially and academically to maximize their potential here at Christopher Newport University. Through Psi Upsilon, members have actually seen significant improvements academically as we exceed Christopher Newports all greek average for men and rank higher than all recognized fraternities overall GPA's.
Does Psi Upsilon haze prospective members?
Absolutely not. Hazing has been a long-lasting stigma of the greek system and we hope to put an emphasis on how 100% opposed to hazing Psi Upsilon is both nationally and locally at this colony. While prospective members will certainly be challenged to expand themselves and try new things we will never force a member to do anything he opposes. Nor will we ever put a prospective or current member through demeaning or embarrassing acts for the amusing of others in the name of the fraternity.
